One March, One Direction is this year’s theme for the Pre-opening activities of SPUQC for SY 2017-2018 held at the Sampaguita Hall on July 24-27, 2017.

The activity aimed to deepen awareness and involvement in the “building of communion” in school and in the parish; to participate in budgeting mindful of the financial capability of the institution; to get a thorough orientation of the SPC OBE framework; and to deepen understanding on legal issues relative to employees’ rights, privileges duties and obligation.

The four-day activity started with a Recollection in the morning capped by the launching of the “Huwag Kang Magnakaw” advocacy spearheaded by Father Atilano “Nonong” Fajardo, head of the Ministry of Public Affairs of the Archdiocese of Manila who also served as the Recollection master.
“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success”, thus said the University President, Sister Ma. Nilda Masirag, SPC as she did the perspective setting for the new school year. Looking back with gratitude, she led the body in celebrating the accomplishments of the University along the five Key Result Areas for the previous year. Looking forward, she said that for the next three years, the priorities of the University will focus on the following Key Results Areas: KRA
1: Paulinian Formation KRA
2: Quality Teaching and Learning Systems; KRA
3: Value-Innovated Products and
Services, and KRA
4: Good Governance
and Stewardship.

“To support our theme several activities are set and hopefully are able to attain our objectives. This time we do not sail on sea, we walk and march on terrains towards one direction in solidarity with the entire SPCEM and the universal church in fostering communion among communities not only in our school but in the parishes where we belong. And so in the next three years, we shall operationalize these priorities and projects, and review them periodically for further improvement. In this time of uncertainty, with strong faith and hope I am certain that SPUQC will gracefully survive because we commit to embrace a culture of TRUTH flowing from the only ONE TRUTH JESUS CHRIST himself. TRUTH that stands for TRUST, RESPECT, UNITY, TRANSPARENCY AND HUMILITY”, she emphasized.

As it has been part of the pre-opening activities each year, new faces from the Administration, faculty and staff were welcomed for the new school year.

The highlights of the Keynote Speech of the SPC Provincial Superior, Sister Lilia Therese Tolentino, SPC during the SPC Educators’ Congress held in May 2017 were echoed by Mrs. Cristina Price. According to her, the keynote speech was meant “ to situate and orient the participants on the Congregation’s thrusts and directions and answer part of the first objective of Congress, which is “To be enlightened about the present situation and needs of the society and the local Church so as to come up with initiatives to reach out to new areopaghi in the Education Ministry.” The keynote speech took off from the presentation and discussion of the 2013 Capitular Acts of the 47th SPC General Chapter, which consist of three principal acts, namely (1) Have a Mystical Encounter with Christ, (2) Rekindle the Evangelizing Fire and Reach Out to the ‘New Areopaghi,” and (3) Evangelize by the strength of our witness of fraternal communion. The theme of this year’s Educators’ Congress focused on the second act—“Reaching out to the New Areopaghi” around which the speech of the Provincial Superior revolved.

In the session for the New Finance Officer’s Hour, Sister Lauren Risma, SPC, the new Vice- President for Finance explained the need for an Operational Plan for a definite period usually one year which is expressed in financial terms and based on expected income and expenditure. She also suggested some cost-cutting measures that will help the University reduce expenditures. Budgeting per unit followed after her talk.

In line with KRA 2 which is Quality Teaching and Learning Systems, the SPCEM OBE Framework was presented by Mr. Marlon Patrick Lofredo and the OBE Workshop was facilitated by Dr. Madelyn Menor and Mr. Marlon Patrick Lofredo for the College department and Mrs. Evangeline Soriano for the Basic Education Department while the Non-Teaching Staff had their session on Managing Workplace Relationship with Ms. Catherine Abiva, Director for Human Resource Development.

On the third day, Atty. Josephus Jimenez gave a whole-day talk on Legal Issues relative to employees’ rights, privileges, duties and obligation to clarify concerns of the employees affecting the workplace.

The last day of the pre-opening activities was spent for the presentation of the Faculty Handbook by Dr. Adrian Carvajal, President of the Faculty Club, and the Staff Handbook by Ms. Catherine Abiva. The launching of SPUQC’s Five -Year Diamond Jubilee Preparation was held shortly after the presentations.

Indeed, the four days were packed with activities that support the theme “One
March, One Direction” which will help the University carry out the SPC Congregation’s thrusts in general, and of SPUQC, in particular in the next years to come.
