A Course on Cybersecurity Gets a Push

On August 24, 2017, the IT faculty members, led by their Program Chairperson, Ms. Marites Fontanilla, met with Mr. Alan Cabanlong, the Assistant Secretary of Cyber Security and Enabling Technologies of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to discuss the academe-government partnership between St Paul University Quezon City and the said agency for IT faculty immersion.

The immersion program aims to: (a) align classroom instruction that is industry-relevant; and (b) update the skills of the faculty by working side-by-side with industry practitioners.

The meeting turned out to be productive as it resulted to the actual immersion of the teachers beginning September 2017, which involved exposure of the participants to actual business analysis, software quality assurance, and project documentation.

This immersion program marks the beginning of a continued fruitful relationship between SPUQC and DITC as Asec. Cabanlong also presents the CyberSecurity Reference Curriculum to the SPUQC team.  The reference curriculum provides coherent launching point from which to develop or enhance the teaching of cybersecurity issues including understanding of national policy frameworks, cybersecurity technology, threat and mitigation practices and the spectrum of issues entangles in the practices of cybersecurity.  The reference curriculum gives emphasis on improving cybersecurity awareness, preparedness and resilience.

During the meeting, Asec. Cabanlong cited the four themes of the CyberSecurity Reference Curriculum as:

Theme 1: CyberSecurity and the Fundamentals of CyberSecurity

Theme 2: Risk Vectors

Theme 3: International CyberSecurity Organizations, Policies, and Standards

Theme 4: CyberSecurity Management in the National Context

SPUQC in collaboration with DICT, may offer a program pertinent to the first theme, which aims to introduce the students to basic cyber risk analysis methodology and management.  At the end of the course, the students will learn to develop systems architecture and strategies aimed at mitigating the risks.  Asec. Cabanlong has assured SPUQC that he and his team will assist the University in implementing the curriculum.
